MEDIA ADVISORY: Press Conference to Address Unequal Protection in St. James Parish
WHAT: Press conference addressing the unequal protection of communities in St. James Parish and the upcoming council meeting’s decision on permitting a solar farm in the 6th District
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, June 18, 2024, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM CST, before the St. James Parish council meeting that evening.
LOCATION: St. James Courthouse Annex
HOW TO WATCH: In person or via the Inclusive Louisiana Facebook page
WHY: The residents of St. James Parish are calling attention to the glaring disparity in how the parish council and planning commission address industrial permits. At the St. James Parish Council meeting on June 18, the council will consider permitting a solar farm in the 6th District. At the hearing last month, the St. James Parish Planning Commission members asked vigorous questions when the permit came before that body, expressing concern over the farm’s impact on
health. This level of scrutiny stands in stark contrast to the commission’s silence as more harmful facilities – including Formosa Plastics, Wanhua, and a Koch Methanol expansion – were proposed for the majority Black 4th and 5th Districts.
The parish’s dedication to protecting the 6th District residents – most of whom are white – from a non-polluting solar farm is the latest example of unequal protection in St. James Parish. This press conference will highlight these disparities and call for fair treatment and protection of all parish residents, regardless of race or district.
KEY SPEAKERS:

- Barbara Washington, Inclusive Louisiana
BACKGROUND:
The disparities in treatment are stark and concerning. While non-polluting projects in predominantly white districts face intense scrutiny, heavily polluting facilities are quietly approved in majority Black districts. This systemic inequity in environmental justice cannot continue. The community demands equal protection and fair consideration for all residents of St. James Parish. This press conference will provide a platform for residents and advocates to voice their concerns and urge the council to adopt a more equitable approach.
