Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony for the $2.9 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, which will use sediment, water and nutrients from the Mississippi River to build as much as 21 square miles of new land in in Plaquemines and Jefferson parishes over the next 50 years, has been both praised and derided by environmental organizations, fishers and public officials.
