Anne Rolfes, director of the environmental justice group Louisiana Bucket Brigade, got her start in the environmental justice space working in the Niger Delta, where Shell’s oil spills and excessive flaring—a process in which gas is burned and released into the atmosphere—have gravely impacted the environment and health of communities living there. Hundreds of Nigerian people protested against Shell’s constant pollution and environmental destruction, but were met with military weaponry that the company bought to use against protesters.
