Governor Jeff Landry, a man who is showering tax breaks and support to corporations like Meta and Hyundai, had the nerve last week to pick a fight with the mayor of New Orleans regarding a proposed bond issuance. The city needs the proceeds for basic services – infrastructure and payroll. But suddenly, the Governor is interested in fiscal responsibility (see our statement, issued in conjunction with Rural Roots, about this double standard).

This from a Governor whose administration plans to GIVE Hyundai corporation $100 million dollars – yes, you read that right!!!! – toward construction of a polluting steel plant. This from a Governor whose administration has purchased $91 million dollars’ worth of land, with plans to lease it to Hyundai for $1 a year.

An already poor state has no business giving our money away. We need to use public money for the public good. The $191 million dollars that Louisiana is GIVING to Hyundai could be used for our parks, our bridges, our firefighters. Couldn’t we use that money for the always elusive teacher raises?
