You may remember the state of Louisiana’s terrible plan to destroy the beautiful coast of Cameron Parish with gas export facilities. Four years ago this fall, our collaboration with the fishermen there hit a high point, with our flotilla that sailed in the waters near one of the Lake Charles casinos, where gas export executives were meeting to carve up our coast.  

Our success in stopping the gas export industry in our state ran into a mack truck on inauguration day last year, when Trump signed an executive order facilitating full speed ahead on the assault on our coast. Families from the tiny fishing village of Cameron Parish had actually persuaded Biden to halt this industry, pending a review. But then came Trump.  

Now, there are countless stories of the demise of the Cameron fishing industry. This is exactly what we feared would happen. Although it’s painful to acknowledge, it’s also important to be honest. The damage from the gas export industry is extreme, but community members are still standing up. We are continuing to partner with our longtime partner, Fishermen Involved in Sustaining our Heritage (FISH), and we are still after these abusive companies (Venture Global, anyone?).
